Evan Samuel Mickelson, Phil’s only son, is 23 years old as of October 22, 2026. He is the youngest of three children born to golf champion Phil Mickelson and Amy Mickelson.
Born: March 23, 2003. Field: software engineering and graphics programming. Golf career: none on record.
Two sourced stories define his public biography. One is a 2003 birth emergency, told by his father in 2004. The other is a technology career documented on Evan’s own professional website and in Brown University’s 2025 commencement program.
The 2003 Medical Crisis: The Day That Reshaped the Mickelson Family
March 23, 2003. A delivery went wrong.
According to Phil Mickelson’s account, published in an Associated Press report in January 2004 and preserved in the Los Angeles Times archive, Amy suffered a six-inch tear in an artery supplying the uterus and bled heavily. Phil said she was two or three minutes from dying before a radiologist performed an emergency procedure.
Evan did not breathe for seven minutes after birth. Phil credited the emergency-room nurses’ immediate intervention with preventing serious long-term consequences. Both mother and son, he said, were healthy afterward.
Source boundary: every medical detail traces to Phil’s retrospective statements. NBC Sports reproduced the AP report with the same essential details. Neither is hospital documentation, so each claim belongs to Phil.
Third Child, Only Son
Amanda and Sophia were already in the household. Evan became the third child, the youngest, and the only son. Family reporting places his childhood alongside Phil’s career on the professional circuit, in a family whose public identity was shaped by a father competing at golf’s highest level.

What the 2003 Season Record Shows
The Los Angeles Times reported in January 2004 that Phil attributed his difficult 2003 season to having more on his mind than golf.
The numbers:
- 38th on the PGA Tour money list
- Zero tournament victories
- One top-three finish
- A tie for 55th at the 2003 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields, per Sportsnet.ca
The U.S. Open result confirms Phil kept competing after Evan’s birth. It does not show he left the hospital for a tournament, or that any event was canceled. No consulted source places Phil in the delivery room or ties the birth to a specific tournament booking.
The documented link is emotional. Phil publicly connected a family crisis to a hard year.
Stepping Off the Green: Evan’s Independent Private Trajectory
Privacy is not anonymity.
Evan’s personal life stays comparatively private. His technical career does not. Yahoo Sports family-profile reporting describes him as a casual golfer who did not follow his father into professional competition. No reliable source explains why, and none documents a junior golf circuit, an abandoned golf ambition, or a decision to live anonymously. This article supplies none.
Brown University
Evan’s professional website identifies him as a Brown University graduate in computer science and economics. Brown’s 2025 commencement program separately lists Evan Samuel Mickelson among Bachelor of Science degree candidates.
His site names his interests: computer graphics, game development, programming, and Brown RISD Game Developers.
From Internships to Graphics Programming
Evan’s own website lists this work history:
- June–November 2023: software engineering and product management internship at 2K Games
- May–August 2024: gameplay programming internship at Epic Games, where he reports working on Fortnite Festival with Unreal Engine and C++
- Public profile, accessed in 2026: graphics programmer at ByteDance, working on PICO headsets, with a stated focus on rendering, networking, data synchronization, and C++
These titles come from his first-person profile, not an employer announcement. Employment can change.

The Blended Legacy of the Mickelson Dynasty
Phil Mickelson’s public identity was built through professional golf. Evan’s public professional profile centers on computer science, game development, and graphics programming. Family fame draws public interest. It does not hand children their parents’ ambitions.
Amy Mickelson sits at the center of the 2003 emergency Phil later described, but her life runs wider than that one event. A separate Amy Mickelson profile covers the broader family chronology.
Amanda and Sophia have their own biographies. This one does not duplicate them.
Evan’s education and career show a life built outside the sport that made his surname famous. His biography is not an unfinished version of Phil’s.
Evan Mickelson’s most clearly documented adult achievement is not a replication of his father’s sporting career, but the development of a separate professional identity in technology.
